A gas explosion in Ijora Badia, Lagos, left 15 people injured on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred around 4:10 pm in a mini shop containing multiple gas cylinders. A 25kg cylinder leaked gas, which ignited due to mishandling, triggering a sudden blast.

Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed that the fire was caused by a gas leak from improper handling. “It was a case of poor handling of gas products, which unfortunately allowed gas to escape and come in contact with a flame,” she explained.

The fire, which affected a bungalow with 15 rooms and seven shops, was quickly extinguished by firefighters from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station, LASEMA, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and LASAMBUS.

While 15 individuals suffered burn injuries, none of the injuries were life-threatening, and no fatalities were reported.

Victims received immediate first aid, and some were transported to hospitals for further treatment.

Adeseye assured that the situation was contained, stating, “The danger was completely averted, and normalcy has since returned to the area.” This explosion follows a similar tragedy on the Otedola Bridge in March, which claimed five lives.
