The Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, has asked state governors in the country to expect a revolution from state lawmakers.

He lamented that legislative powers had so far been existing on paper because the lawmakers could not do anything without state governors’ approval.

Oluomo spoke at a legislative luncheon organised by the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Saturday.

He accused the governors of ensuring that previous attempts to amend the constitution and give independence to the legislature failed.

He said the assent given to the Constitution Fourth Alteration Bill by President Muhammadu Buhari had liberated the state legislators from going cap in hand to get governors’ approval for their allowances and salaries monthly.

He said, “When Buhari wanted to sign the bill into law, we played some tricks with the governors.

“We ensured that the Nigeria Governors’ Forum was not informed that the President was going to sign the bill into law.”

Oluomo expressed the hope that the President would issue an Executive Order on the implementation of the autonomy.

He added, “The moment that is done, you will see the revolution. Legislators at the state level are not docile. They are not foolish.

“The truth of the matter is that when you provide food for the dog and you hold a stick, how do you expect the dog to eat the food? The dog will be afraid to eat the food.

“That is why legislators have been unable to perform. We have many people like me, but when you get there (state assemblies), you will be humbled.”
