The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda, has reportedly agreed to step down from her position, but with the condition that the resignation must occur during a plenary session.

This comes after the House adjourned indefinitely on February 17, following a vote of confidence in her leadership by 36 out of 40 members.

Sources have confirmed that although Meranda is willing to relinquish her position, the process must adhere to formal procedures.

One source explained, “If the Speaker would agree to resign, it has to be done during plenary when the House reconvenes. There are procedures for doing things like that. Madam Speaker cannot just resign like that without due process.”

Additionally, Meranda may return to her previous position as Deputy Speaker. However, the exact timing of her resignation remains uncertain, as the House is yet to reconvene.

Sources also revealed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has intervened in the crisis, sending delegates from Abuja to mediate. “They are doing everything within their power to ensure there is peace in the Assembly,” said one source.

As part of the resolution, the next Speaker will be selected from Lagos West, with eight lawmakers already being considered for the role.

These include Setonji David, Temitope Adewale, Kehinde Joseph, Adedamola Kasunmu, Lukman Olumoh, Wale Rauf Sulaimon, Nureni Akinsanya, and Surajudeen Tijani.

The APC intervention, led by key figures like former APC National Chairman Bisi Akande and former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba, aims to restore peace to the Assembly and ensure smooth governance.
