The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has defended the ₦40,000 monthly salary paid to street sweepers, following a viral video that accused the agency of underpaying its workers.
The video, which sparked widespread outrage, featured a LAWMA sweeper claiming they were earning ₦30,000 monthly, later increased to ₦40,000 in February, far below the promised minimum wage of ₦85,000.
In a statement released by Jibril Gawat, Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Social Media, LAWMA clarified that the street sweeping program is managed through private companies, which are responsible for paying the workers directly. The agency emphasized that the current wage structure is compliant with the national minimum wage and proportionate to the workers’ four-hour daily shifts.
According to the statement, *“Street sweepers are engaged through private companies under structured contracts, with their responsibilities and entitlements clearly defined. Following a recent wage review, sweeper salaries have been adjusted to align with the national minimum wage. Sweepers now earn ₦40,000 per month, while supervisors earn ₦50,000 per month.”*
LAWMA also highlighted its commitment to improving worker welfare, citing initiatives such as health and safety training, reclassification of sweeping routes for security, accident insurance coverage, and the provision of uniforms and work tools. The agency assured the public that any discrepancies in salary payments or contractual violations would be promptly addressed.
“The success of the street sweeping programme relies heavily on the dedication of the workers, and we remain committed to ensuring fair treatment and improved working conditions,” the statement added.
The viral video had sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians calling for better pay and working conditions for the sweepers. LAWMA’s response aims to clarify the wage structure and reassure the public of its dedication to worker welfare.
