Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has strongly denied the viral allegations suggesting his involvement in the pregnancy of former Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) housemate, Nengi Rebecca Hampson.
The rumors, which gained momentum after a popular blogging platform made the claim, were swiftly dismissed by both Nengi and Governor Diri’s camp. Nengi herself took to social media to debunk the speculation, stating that the claims were unfounded.
Governor Diri expressed his shock and disappointment over the false claims, especially on the day his administration celebrated its 5th anniversary. His Director of New Media, Dr. Kola Oredipe, also addressed the matter on social media, describing the rumors as “baseless fabrications.”
Oredipe further emphasized that “Nengi Rebecca Hampson has no personal relationship with Governor Diri,” adding, “It is regrettable that purveyors of fake news are not happy with the towering political profile of the governor.”
He continued by condemning the spread of misinformation, calling it a deliberate attempt to divert attention from the achievements of the Diri administration. “This is a distraction, and some of us are very justified in the many reasons offered to regulate the use of various social media platforms,” Oredipe stated.
The Director of New Media also pointed out the irony of the situation, noting that “while we were inaugurating a brand new road in Yenagoa, social media e-rats were spreading falsehoods about the governor.”
In his defense, Oredipe reiterated that the allegations were politically motivated and lacked any factual basis, reinforcing the governor’s reputation as “a man of honor and dignity.”
