Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has sworn in 30 newly elected local government chairmen on Sunday, urging them to embrace the principles of good governance and democracy at the grassroots level.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Adeleke congratulated the newly elected officials and emphasized their duty to deliver meaningful governance in their communities. “I charge you to develop plans of action within the manifesto of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” he said. “As our government is transforming the state for the better, I call on you to be agents of change, community developers, and deliverers of dividends of democracy.”
The election followed a State High Court ruling that empowered the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) to conduct fresh elections in the 30 local councils, including the Area office in Modakeke. The elections were held on February 22, 2025.
Adeleke also praised the resilience of the people of Osun for their overwhelming support during the elections, saying, “Osun people demonstrated courage and passion to exercise their voting rights and they did so by massively supporting our party despite all the constraints.”
In his speech, Adeleke expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for rejecting efforts to destabilize the state. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the rule of law, good governance, and conflict resolution.
However, the governor urged caution amidst ongoing tensions, telling the newly sworn-in officials, “Stay away from the council secretariats to avoid any clash with those whom the police had aided to ‘forcefully’ occupy the local government secretariats.”
Adeleke concluded by calling for patience and a strict adherence to the rule of law, as the government seeks peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict.
