Mudashiru Obasa, the ousted Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, is awaiting a court ruling before considering any return to the assembly.
According to his legal team, there are no plans to withdraw the suit challenging his removal. Obasa’s lead counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), confirmed that the case will proceed to a hearing on February 28, 2025.
Fashanu emphasized, “Obasa does not plan to return to the Assembly until after he has obtained a judgment from the court. Returning prematurely could be deemed an illegal action.”
Obasa had previously rejected his removal on January 13, 2025, citing illegalities in the process. Despite attempts by political leaders to mediate, Obasa remains resolute in his legal battle, stating he would only step down if due process is followed.
As the crisis within the Assembly continues, the President’s intervention has sparked discussions about potential resolutions, including the possibility of both Obasa and his successor, Mojisola Meranda, stepping down for a new speaker.
However, Fashanu noted that his client had not been briefed on any proposed settlement.
In the meantime, tensions in the Assembly are escalating, with three staff members remanded in DSS custody following an altercation with officers.
