The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing a major setback as no aspirants have come forward to purchase its N40 million expression of interest and nomination forms for the upcoming Anambra governorship election.
The party had initially set the sale period from February 24 to March 5, with a March 7 submission deadline. However, due to a lack of interest, the deadline has now been extended to March 10.
An anonymous party insider revealed that the ongoing internal crisis, which includes leadership disputes and instability within the party, has made potential aspirants hesitant.
“No aspirant has purchased the PDP Anambra governorship nomination forms due to the party’s internal issues,” the source said. The instability has eroded confidence in the party’s ability to conduct a fair primary.
PDP’s internal challenges are further compounded by a legal battle over the position of National Secretary, which is set for a Supreme Court hearing on March 10.
Despite the setbacks, PDP National Deputy Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha, expressed optimism, stating that the party’s structures across the country remain strong.
The Anambra governorship primary is scheduled for April 5, with an appeal committee set for April 8. The PDP is hoping that the extended form sale deadline will encourage more participation.
