The Alaafin of Oyo-elect, Oba Akeem Owoade, has vowed to secure the return of the kingdom’s artefacts looted by the British in 1895.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the traditional ruler confirmed his commitment to not only recover these cultural treasures but also to ensure compensation is made for their return.
“Oba Owoade would make sure that the artefacts taken away by the British in 1895 are brought back with some payments,” said Bode Durojaiye, Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin.
This initiative follows Nigeria’s recent success in negotiating the return of Benin artefacts looted during the 1897 British expedition. The repatriated artefacts were returned to the Oba of Benin.
Alaafin Owoade further emphasized his focus on the socio-economic upliftment of his people, pledging to help unemployed youths acquire vocational skills and empower widows and widowers.
He also expressed his intent to continue the legacy of his predecessor, the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, in promoting cultural events such as the Sango and Oranmiyan festivals.
“I want to be remembered for the development of health facilities and the empowerment of the youth during my reign,” the new Alaafin added.
