President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the upgrade of the Maiduguri Airport to international status, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s aviation development.

The move ensures that each of the country’s six geopolitical zones now boasts at least one international airport.

In a statement released on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, via his verified X handle (@SundayDareSD), Tinubu also gave the nod for the official takeoff of the African Aviation and Aerospace University in Abuja.

“President Tinubu has approved the upgrade of the Maiduguri airport to the status of an international airport. This completes the round of international airports across the country, with each geo-political zone having an airport,” Dare announced.

The African Aviation and Aerospace University, a specialised institution, is set to advance education in aviation and aerospace, positioning Nigeria as a key player in the sector within Africa. “Equally, the African Aviation and Aerospace University takes off in Abuja,” Dare added.

Nigeria’s existing international airports, including Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, serve as vital gateways for travel, trade, and tourism.

The addition of Maiduguri to this list is expected to boost economic activities in the North-East region.

The upgrade aligns with Tinubu’s vision to enhance infrastructure and education, fostering growth in critical sectors.
