In an effort to tackle open defecation and improve sanitation, the Lagos State Government, in collaboration with WaterAid and private operators, has launched a project to build 350 public toilets across the state.
The initiative, announced over the weekend, is part of the state’s broader strategy to enhance access to clean water and promote better hygiene.
Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, confirmed that work on the project had already begun, with key locations for the toilets identified.
“This initiative is part of our broader strategy to ensure all Lagosians have access to clean water, decent sanitation, and good hygiene practices,” Rotimi-Akodu said.
He also expressed his gratitude to WaterAid for their critical role in addressing the state’s sanitation issues. “We are not proud of borehole drilling, and we are eager to move away from it.
Thanks to our partnership with WaterAid, we are on track to generate 100 million gallons of pipe-borne water daily through the Adiyan Waterworks,” he added.
Dr. Adebayo Alao, Programme Lead for WaterAid Lagos, highlighted the organization’s commitment to reaching 10 million residents directly and another 17 million indirectly by 2028 through its water, sanitation, and hygiene programs.
WaterAid has also supported the renovation of primary health centers, including providing medical equipment valued at over N3 billion to facilities in Ogba and Epe.
