Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, emphasized that security remains a central focus of his administration as he met with security chiefs and key stakeholders to discuss strategies to address rising killings and abductions in the state.
The governor made this statement via his verified X handle on Monday, highlighting that the meeting centered on proactive measures to combat security challenges, restore peace, and ensure citizens’ safety.
Okpebholo stressed that maintaining security is crucial for the state’s development, stating, “Security remains a top priority on our administration’s agenda because where there is security, there is progress.”
This meeting came amidst growing unrest in the state, particularly in Ekpoma, where protests have been ongoing following the alleged killing of a suspected internet fraudster by the police.
The incident occurred when the police attempted to stop a vehicle at a checkpoint. The driver fled, and in the process, a police officer shot and killed him. His brother, who was in the car, was arrested and taken to the state command headquarters in Benin.
A local resident described the incident, stating, “The boy who is suspected to be involved in Internet fraud known as Yahoo Yahoo was stopped by the police, but he opened his car and took to his heels. One of the officers shot him, and he died.”
The protests have continued since the incident, with residents hoping to gain more attention, even attempting to involve students from Ambrose Alli University, though the school was not in session at the time.
In response to the escalating violence, Okpebholo reiterated his administration’s commitment to building a safer, more prosperous Edo, where residents can live, work, and conduct business without fear.
