Nigeria and Brazil have officially signed the commercial phase of the $1.1bn Green Imperative Project (GIP), aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and fostering private-sector investment in Nigeria.

The project, which was initially agreed upon in 2018, is considered the largest agricultural initiative in Africa, prioritizing sustainable, low-carbon farming techniques to improve food production efficiency.

Vice President Kashim Shettima hailed the signing as part of the Tinubu administration’s efforts to improve food security and stimulate economic growth.

He remarked, “This GIP will link small-scale farmers with the agricultural value chains, addressing the long-standing issue of low agricultural productivity in Nigeria.”

Brazilian Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos Garcete, expressed his country’s commitment, noting, “We are not just selling or donating; we are here to be partners with Nigeria for long-term growth in agriculture, livestock, and job creation.”

The project will see the importation and assembly of agricultural equipment in Nigeria, creating jobs and fostering local industries. With the backing of both governments, the GIP is expected to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s agricultural transformation.
