The Federal Government has enhanced electronic surveillance across Nigeria’s borders, now covering 60% of the country’s 4,047-kilometre border space.

This expansion is part of the government’s efforts to improve national security and protect the nation’s borders through advanced technology.

In a post shared on his X handle, Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, confirmed that over 30 operational vehicles have been deployed to patrol and monitor the borders. He emphasized the importance of technology in strengthening Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

“Nigeria has also expanded electronic border surveillance, now covering 60% of Nigeria’s 4,047km border space following the deployment of technological solutions. Over 30 operational vehicles have been added to the fleet dedicated to the surveillance and patrol of our borders, ensuring better territorial integrity,” Tunji-Ojo said.

The minister also revealed that the government had uncovered 6,000 foreign nationals who had illegally obtained Nigeria’s National Identification Numbers (NIN) before the Bola Tinubu administration.

This discovery is part of ongoing efforts to streamline the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) database.

“The National Identity Management Commission currently boasts of over 120 million enrolments in the national digital database.

Also, in line with its commitment to streamlining the NIMC’s database, the ministry has uncovered about 6,000 individuals from foreign countries who, before this administration, illegally obtained National Identity Numbers,” the minister noted.

Tunji-Ojo also highlighted the recent clearing of a backlog of over two million NIN modification requests by the NIMC within a few weeks last year, a move that aligns with the government’s focus on enhancing identity management in Nigeria.
