Senate President Godswill Akpabio has filed a formal petition with the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, demanding an investigation into an alleged assassination plot against him.
The petition, submitted on April 3, 2025, comes in response to accusations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on April 1, 2025.
Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed that Akpabio had instructed former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to assassinate her in Kogi State, with the intent of framing her constituents.
In his petition, Akpabio strongly denied the allegations, calling them a “heinous lie” and a “reckless and deliberate attempt” to damage his reputation. He accused Akpoti-Uduaghan of trying to incite political unrest and tarnish his public image.
“I write to formally bring to your attention and seek immediate investigation and prosecution of a criminally defamatory and malicious statement made against me by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan,” Akpabio stated in his petition.
“The accusation, made without any evidence, is a reckless and deliberate attempt to damage my reputation, endanger my life and security, and incite political unrest.”
Akpabio further emphasized that the false claims had spread widely across various media, including radio, television, and social media, and he urged the law enforcement agencies to handle the matter with the seriousness it deserves.
He concluded by calling for Akpoti-Uduaghan’s prosecution for criminal defamation, false accusation, and conduct likely to breach the peace.
This development adds a new layer to the ongoing political tensions surrounding the Nigerian Senate.
