The race for Anambra State’s governorship election heats up as major political parties prepare for primaries on April 5.

While incumbent Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is the sole candidate for re-election, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Labour Party (LP) face fierce competition in selecting their flagbearers for the November 8, 2025, election.

APGA has already confirmed Soludo’s candidacy, citing his strong first-term performance and broad support, even among opposition figures. APGA’s National Publicity Secretary, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, stated, “The National Working Committee has given the governor an automatic ticket for his sterling performance in the first term, surpassing that of any other governors within the same term limit.”

Meanwhile, the APC has attracted seven aspirants, including prominent figures like Prof. Obiora Okonkwo and Nicholas Ukachukwu. APC’s primaries will take place this Saturday, with the party’s N50 million nomination form drawing significant interest.

The Labour Party, which has two contenders, George Moghalu and John Nwosu, is also preparing for a straightforward primary, promising unity post-election. “Let no one be weak, let us all stand strong, be united and nothing will be impossible for us to achieve,” said LP’s Deputy Publicity Secretary, James Udoh.

The PDP, which struggled to find candidates initially, now has two cleared aspirants. Their primary will also be held on April 5, with the PDP Publicity Secretary, Obumneme Nnoli, confident the party can challenge APGA’s dominance in the election.
