Traffic came to a standstill on the Lekki-Ajah axis and parts of Ikoyi on Tuesday after the gates of Banana Island in Lagos were abruptly shut, causing gridlock in the area.
The shutdown, which has caused significant delays, was speculated to be linked to the planned demolition of the Banana Club House. Viral videos shared on social media showed vehicles trapped in long queues, with some individuals seen manning the estate’s gates.
Contradictory reports have emerged regarding the agency responsible for the lockdown. While some speculated it was a federal government action, others attributed it to state government agencies.
A viral broadcast message claimed that the Lagos State Government had shut the gates, preventing residents and visitors from entering or leaving.
In response, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA) denied involvement in the lockdown. LABSCA spokesperson Adu Ademuyiwa clarified, “It is not true. Our men are not there. We have not stopped any residents or visitors from entering their estate.”
The Lagos State government has previously stated its intention to demolish illegal structures in Banana Island, in line with urban planning regulations. Gbolahan Oki, General Manager of LABSCA, had emphasized the importance of ensuring public safety and compliance with building codes.
He also confirmed that demolitions would be carried out on illegal structures, particularly those located under high-tension lines.
