Lagos Island, Victoria Island (VI), and Lekki areas were plunged into a second day of severe traffic congestion on April 3, 2025, causing untold hardship for commuters.
The chaos followed the unexpected closure of the Independent Bridge at Bonny Camp for urgent repairs.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Works Minister Dave Umahi rushed to the site, acknowledging the plight of stranded commuters. “I take full responsibility for the traffic gridlock caused by the closure,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said, attributing the issue to poor communication about the bridge closure.
The 53-year-old bridge was shut down on Tuesday for repairs to address deteriorating supports and shaky beams. Umahi confirmed the closure, which was done without his prior knowledge, and apologized for the lack of planning.
“The closure was avoidable; we should have implemented a better strategy,” Umahi admitted.
As the gridlock stretched for hours, many motorists faced the risk of running out of fuel or overheating their vehicles, with some even abandoning their cars to trek long distances.
“It was very scary and hectic,” said motorist Niyi Ajetomobi, who spent over ten hours commuting. “Some drivers even hit my car; people were walking because there were no buses.”
In response, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) deployed 600 officers to help manage traffic, and security personnel were stationed to ensure safety.
Umahi vowed to remain in Lagos until Sunday, overseeing remedial work on the bridge, with plans for its temporary restoration by the weekend.
Meanwhile, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged residents to consider remote work as an alternative to minimize vehicular movement and reduce the pressure on the affected routes.
Commuter Precious Iheanacho shared her frustration: “It was a terrible experience. From Law School to Civic Centre, it took almost two hours to cover just a short distance.”
