Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has advised residents to avoid unnecessary trips to Victoria Island over the next few weeks due to heavy traffic caused by the ongoing repairs on the Independence Bridge.

While inspecting the construction site on Thursday, Sanwo-Olu encouraged Lagosians to embrace virtual platforms to minimize the strain on roads. “If you don’t have business to do in Victoria Island over the next two to three weeks, conduct your business via social media, telephone, Zoom, or online meetings,” he said. “Plan ahead—if you don’t need to visit someone physically, then don’t come.”

He also suggested adjusting travel schedules to off-peak hours to reduce congestion. “If you do not need to go out at 7:00 a.m., wait until 10:00 a.m. Let those who must leave early go first,” he added.

To mitigate the traffic, Sanwo-Olu confirmed that more officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would be deployed to the affected areas.

“You will see a lot of LASTMA officers on the road. We are calling them in from other areas to ensure proper traffic management,” he assured.

With the Independence Bridge linking Ahmadu Bello Way to Marina and CMS closed for repairs, the governor reiterated the importance of the work for public safety.

“This work must be done for everyone’s safety. Let’s work together to manage the situation,” he stated.
