The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a stern warning to motorists that eating, drinking, or smoking while driving is a punishable offense under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
In a post shared on its official social media platform on Wednesday, LASTMA reminded drivers that engaging in these activities behind the wheel could result in penalties including vehicle impoundment, a three-month jail sentence, or six months of community service.
The agency emphasized that these rules are designed to prevent distracted driving and ensure road safety. “Smoking, drinking, and eating while driving is an offence according to the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018,” LASTMA stated.
Violators of the law face serious consequences depending on the severity of the infraction. The agency outlined: “Additional Penalty: Impound vehicle/ Three (3) Months imprisonment or six (6) months community service.”
This reminder comes amid rising concerns over road accidents across Lagos, further underscoring the importance of focused and responsible driving.
The statement underscores the commitment of LASTMA to uphold safety on the roads and reduce preventable accidents caused by distracted driving.
