Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has announced ambitious plans for the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport to operate 24 hours a day, enhancing its competitiveness and boosting the state’s economy.
Speaking during the March edition of his monthly media chat, “Meet Your Governor,” Oyebanji emphasized the strategic importance of the airport in attracting investment, improving transportation, and fostering agricultural exports.
“We are determined that before the end of this year, we will install the Instrument Landing System (ILS) at the Ado Airport,” said Governor Oyebanji. “If we are able to do that, it will be the second airport in the Southwest, after Lagos, to have such a facility, allowing planes to land at night and in extreme weather conditions.”
The governor revealed that discussions are underway with three major airlines to initiate commercial flights at the airport, furthering the state’s ambitions to become a regional aviation hub.
The installation of the ILS, which is expected to cost approximately N4.6 billion, is a critical part of ensuring the airport’s 24-hour operational capacity.
“The goal is to make this airport a major hub and driver of the economy,” Oyebanji added. “With this infrastructure, we will be able to facilitate air travel, tourism development, and more investments in the region.”
The governor also highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance the airport’s cargo facilities, including the construction of a new cargo shed for farm produce and cash crops. These developments are expected to play a key role in the exportation of agricultural goods.
In terms of economic growth, Oyebanji pointed to significant strides, such as the rise in the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which has soared from N600 million to over N2 billion monthly.
This, he explained, reflects the success of his administration’s commitment to transparent governance and effective resource utilization.
“As we continue to improve the state’s infrastructure and business environment, more investors are coming in, and the economy is growing,” he said. “Our goal is to create a more sustainable development and improve the living standards of our people.”
