The Ekiti State Government has urged residents to refrain from building houses in flood-prone areas, highlighting the risks posed by flooding and the state’s ongoing efforts to mitigate such disasters.

Bamitale Oguntoyinbo, Chairman of the Ekiti State Environmental Protection and Watershed Management Agency (EKSEPWAMA), made the call during an inspection tour of dredging projects at Inisa, Amutu, Oke Ose, and Mayan rivers in Moba Local Government Area.

Oguntoyinbo praised the Governor Biodun Oyebanji-led administration for its proactive flood prevention initiatives, stating, “The government is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents, particularly in flood-prone areas.”

He emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal to prevent blockages in drainage systems and waterways, which can exacerbate flooding risks. “Residents must be vigilant about waste disposal to protect our drainage systems,” Oguntoyinbo added.

EKSEPWAMA’s General Manager, Olukayode Adunmo, explained that the ongoing dredging projects are part of a larger effort to protect communities from flooding and safeguard lives and property. “These projects aim to prevent flooding and protect the people of Ekiti,” Adunmo said. “It’s vital that the board sees the work firsthand for a better understanding of our efforts.”

Adunmo also acknowledged Governor Oyebanji’s support, saying, “We appreciate the governor for providing the necessary funds for the dredging efforts.”

In addition, the Special Adviser on Special Services, Prince Adewole Ajakaye, stressed the importance of regular project evaluations to ensure timely completion and adherence to contract specifications. “Regular evaluations are key to ensuring these projects meet their goals and are completed on time,” Ajakaye said.

Despite a slight delay in the dredging project at Inisa River due to mechanical issues, Ajakaye expressed satisfaction with the progress. “We are confident that the project will be completed soon,” he concluded.

The ongoing dredging projects aim to secure Ekiti communities against flooding while preserving the safety of residents and their properties.
