The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the closure of Akure Airport following severe damage caused by a torrential downpour on March 3, 2025.

The storm destroyed vital airport equipment and infrastructure, including the control tower, terminal buildings, and staff quarters, leaving passengers stranded and flights canceled.

A statement from FAAN reads, “A team of engineers has been deployed to assess the level of damages and provide remedial solutions. We regret the inconvenience caused and are working tirelessly to restore normal operations.”

Disappointed passengers voiced their frustration. One traveler, Adetutu Muriano, shared her ordeal, saying, “I had an exam today and booked a flight for yesterday only to be told the flight was canceled. I was left with no choice but to travel by bus.”

Another passenger, Babatunde Akinteye, also expressed his frustration after his flight was canceled due to the technical glitches at the airport. FAAN assured the public that it is prioritizing the restoration of services while apologizing for the disruption.
