The Federal Government has entered into a strategic partnership with Agbeyewa Farms Ltd to enhance agricultural production and ensure food security in the country.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, during his visit to the 10,000-hectare farm located in Ipao-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Kyari expressed optimism about the positive impacts the collaboration would have on the agricultural sector, stating, “This partnership will not only boost food production but also help reduce poverty and create jobs.”
He further acknowledged the remarkable achievements of Agbeyewa Farms, praising its founder, Mr. John Olajide, for transforming the agricultural landscape.
Agbeyewa Farms has expanded rapidly since its inception in 2022, growing from a modest 102 hectares of cassava to over 1,500 hectares across multiple locations. Managing Director, Seyi Aiyeleso, highlighted the farm’s growth and future plans, saying, “We aim to cultivate 10,000 hectares by 2026, making Agbeyewa the leading agro-allied enterprise in Africa.”
Aiyeleso also revealed plans for a 26-hectare agro-processing plant to produce cassava derivatives such as flour, starch, sorghum, and ethanol. “Inspired by companies like Omnicane in Mauritius, we are committed to harnessing the full potential of cassava,” he added.
The Ekiti State government has also set ambitious goals, targeting a rise in cassava production from 2 million metric tons to 4 million metric tons by 2026. State Commissioner for Agriculture, Ebenezer Boluwade, emphasized the need for federal support to achieve this goal, “We aim to put Ekiti on the map as a major hub for agricultural production.”
Minister Kyari assured the farmers that the government would address challenges such as transportation and post-harvest loss, stating, “We are committed to ensuring that farmers have the support they need to enhance productivity.”
With the support of partnerships like the one with Agbeyewa Farms, the government is optimistic about achieving sustainable food security and economic stability in Nigeria.
