The Federal Government, through the National Universities Commission (NUC), has unveiled plans to introduce 12 new academic programs into Nigerian universities’ curricula.

These courses aim to enhance the educational landscape and equip students with the necessary skills for the evolving job market.

The new programs, which include Artificial Intelligence, Islamic Economics and Finance, Sports Management, and Water Sanitation and Hygiene, among others, were chosen after a comprehensive review process.

The NUC formed 12 panels to assess proposals and recommend curriculum updates.

Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, Executive Secretary of the NUC, emphasized that the exercise is crucial for preparing students for the demands of the modern world.

“The landscape of education and knowledge is rapidly evolving, demanding a curriculum that not only imparts knowledge but also cultivates critical thinking, adaptability, and innovation,” Ribadu said.

He further stated that the goal is to equip Nigerian students with 21st-century skills and self-reliance, stressing the importance of balancing local content with global best practices.

The 12 programs to be introduced also include Classical Christian Education, Geomatics Engineering, and Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science, reflecting a diverse approach to modern education.
