Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has revoked several traditional titles, including those held by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Governor Boni Haruna, and himself, following a major restructuring of emirates and chiefdoms across the state.
The decision, which was announced during the coronation of the newly installed Chief of Madagali, is part of a broader initiative aimed at modernizing the traditional system in Adamawa.
Governor Fintiri explained, “The restructuring aims to ensure that all district heads align with the newly created emirates and chiefdoms. Traditional titles acquired from the old emirates and chiefdoms are hereby dropped.”
The titles affected by the changes primarily stemmed from the Adamawa and Mubi emirates. As part of the overhaul, Fintiri relinquished his title of Sarki Yaki Mubi, while Atiku Abubakar lost his title as Waziri Adamawa, and Boni Haruna forfeited his title of Makama Mubi.
Governor Fintiri elaborated on the reasoning behind the move: “The creation of new emirates and chiefdoms requires a fresh approach to traditional leadership, including the reassignment of titles.”
The new structure has led to the formation of several new emirates and chiefdoms, all of which were carved out from the former Adamawa and Mubi emirates.
To ease the transition, Fintiri directed traditional councils within the newly created emirates to submit proposals for new titles. These proposals, he emphasized, would be subject to a review process and final approval in accordance with customary laws.
“The Lamido of Adamawa, as the paramount traditional ruler, can submit names for reconsideration, but any new appointments or reinstatements will require the final approval of the state government,” Governor Fintiri concluded.
