Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke has officially launched the extensive remodelling of the Osogbo stadium, marking the first step in his administration’s ambitious plan to elevate sports in Osun State to international standards.

The announcement, made at the stadium on Tuesday, was accompanied by the unveiling of his administration’s sport development agenda.

Speaking to the gathered crowd, Adeleke emphasized that the project is not just a renovation but a complete re-development aimed at creating a world-class facility. He detailed the plan to transform the stadium with major international-standard sporting pitches, including those for football, volleyball, swimming, handball, hockey, and basketball.

“This is not just a renovation, it is a re-development. Our dream is to build a stadium with a capacity to host events like the National Sports Festival and National Youth Games, and even international fixtures such as Super Eagles matches,” Governor Adeleke stated.

In addition to the sporting facilities, the redevelopment includes the construction of a state-of-the-art indoor sports hall, athlete hostels, and a 4-star hotel. These developments are designed with sustainability in mind, ensuring the facility remains financially viable both in the short and long term.

The Governor also highlighted his administration’s broader sport sector agenda, which includes the establishment of the Osun Sports Commission and the creation of a Sport Trust Fund. He revealed that the legal frameworks for both initiatives are nearing completion.

“Part of our plan is to put up strong institutional structures. We have finalized the legal framework for the creation of the Osun Sports Commission, and we are creating a Sport Trust Fund to ensure sustainable sport financing,” Adeleke confirmed.

Governor Adeleke further stressed the importance of rewarding athletes for their achievements, announcing a new initiative to reward Osun athletes based on their performance at various championships.

“The welfare of our athletes is paramount. We will ensure that all athletes who make us proud are handsomely rewarded for their efforts,” he added.

The Governor also extended his support to the state’s two football teams, Osun United and Osun Babes, both of which have been performing well in their respective leagues.

“We are giving greater attention to Osun United and Osun Babes Football Clubs. I am proud of their achievements and the support they are receiving from our administration,” said Adeleke.

Prince Kola Adewusi, the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports Development, also addressed the gathering. He described the project as the beginning of a sporting revolution for Osun State and affirmed that the state would soon be ready to host national sporting events.

“The facilities here will include training pitches for all games, and we are committed to bringing back athletes who have left the state. Osun will take a frontline position in Nigeria’s sports sector,” said Adewusi.

The stadium project is slated for completion within the next 12 months, promising to reshape the sports landscape in Osun State.
