Governors, Media Experts Celebrate NUJ’s 70th Anniversary

As the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) marked its 70th anniversary on March 15, 2025, governors and media experts across the country have extended their congratulations, commending the union’s commitment to press freedom, democracy, and the welfare of journalists.

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State, through his Special Adviser on Communication, Abdullahi Zuru, praised the NUJ for its “steadfast contributions to democracy, press freedom, and national development.”

He highlighted the union’s “unwavering” commitment to journalistic ethics, noting how it has “shaped the media landscape and advocated for journalists’ welfare.”

Similarly, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, lauded the NUJ’s role in promoting ethical journalism. He also urged for the “improvement of journalists’ welfare,” acknowledging the union’s resilience amid the challenges faced over the decades.

“I deeply appreciate the efforts of Nigerian journalists in holding the government accountable while contributing to national progress,” Oborevwori stated. “As the Fourth Estate of the Realm, media practitioners wield significant influence, which they must continue to use responsibly.”

Ibrahim Shuaibu, Publisher of Prime Time News, also joined in celebrating the milestone.

He commended the NUJ for its advocacy in improving working conditions for journalists, while urging continued collaboration to uphold responsible journalism amidst technological changes.

“The NUJ has remained a pillar of support for journalists nationwide,” Shuaibu said. “This anniversary reflects decades of dedication to journalistic excellence and democratic principles.”

The celebration of the NUJ’s 70 years underscores the significant role of the media in Nigeria’s democratic journey and its unwavering efforts in advocating for press freedom and journalists’ welfare.
