The Egbe Omo Ilaje Worldwide has called for urgent government action following the alleged illegal demolition and displacement of residents from Otumara Community, an Ilaje settlement in Lagos.

The President-General of the group, Prince Iwatimigha Irowainu, described the demolition as unlawful and a contempt of court, urging both federal and state authorities to intervene.

Irowainu raised concerns during a press conference in Ajegunle, Lagos, where he stated, “The demolition of Otumara Community was illegal and done in contempt of the ongoing court proceedings.”

He detailed the incident, which occurred between March 7 and 10, 2025, when officials from the Lagos State government, led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on E-GIS, Mr. Olajide A. Biodun, and other key figures, arrived at Otumara with armed police officers and local thugs to carry out the demolition.

The Otumara Community is currently involved in a legal dispute, with a case pending before the Lagos High Court.

“These suits were filed by the Oloto ruling House against the Otumara Community, with the next adjournment set for 7th May 2025,” said Irowainu.

Despite the ongoing litigation, Irowainu claims that the demolition proceeded, supported by Lagos State officials and backed by known area boys. “From 7th to 10th March, they invaded Otumara and demolished all the houses,” he added.

This action has raised fears that other Ilaje communities in Lagos, such as Ijora Badia and Makoko, could face similar treatment.

The group has now appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a thorough investigation into the incident.

“We are calling on His Excellency, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to direct the Inspector General of Police and other relevant security agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation into this matter,” Irowainu said.

The group also urged Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to set up internally displaced persons (IDP) camps for the affected families. Additionally, they have sought help from Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to assist the displaced individuals.

The Ilaje community in Lagos has vowed to resist further unlawful demolitions and displacement by all legal means available.
