Imo State is set to begin the conversion of vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG) as 60 auto technicians recently graduated from a specialized training program.

The training was part of the state’s efforts to promote the adoption of CNG-powered vehicles, which are seen as a more sustainable and eco-friendly fuel alternative.

The announcement was made by the Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin, during the CNG Empowerment and Awareness Summit held in Owerri.

Osanipin expressed appreciation to Governor Hope Uzodimma for supporting the initiative and emphasized the importance of educating Imo residents, especially the youth, about the benefits of switching to CNG-powered vehicles.

“CNG is cheaper, cleaner, and more environmentally friendly, making it the future of fuel for Nigerian vehicles,” Osanipin said.

He also highlighted the importance of using certified conversion kits and specialized workshops to ensure the safety of CNG conversions.

The summit is part of NADDC’s larger campaign to drive the adoption of CNG and standardize its use.

The initiative aligns with the federal government’s broader efforts to address the challenges in the automotive industry while empowering the youth.

Dr. Emeka Madela, Imo State’s Commissioner for Youth Development and Talent, who represented Governor Uzodimma, noted that CNG could offer a safer, cleaner, and more affordable alternative to the challenges Nigerians face with traditional fuels.

In collaboration with NADDC, the Imo State government plans to establish CNG conversion workshops and refilling stations across the state, marking a significant step toward greener energy solutions for Nigeria’s transportation sector.
