The Lagos State Government has revealed plans to divert traffic starting from March 19, 2025, for urgent repairs on the Independence/Mekwen Bridge, inbound the Marina/CMS route. The repairs are expected to last until May 26, 2025.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Oshiyemi, the closure will affect the road from the National Open University of Nigeria through Bonny Camp Bridge to the Independence Bridge.

Additionally, the service lane at Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge will be inaccessible to motorists.

“However, the service lane from Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue will remain open to traffic,” Oshiyemi noted.

To alleviate congestion, alternative routes have been provided. Motorists traveling to Victoria Island from Ahmadu Bello Way are advised to take Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Akin Adesola Street, Falomo Roundabout, and then Obafemi Awolowo Road to Ring Road.

Similarly, those heading to the Third Mainland Bridge should follow Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Akin Adesola Street, Alfred Rewane Road, Osborne Road, and then link Ring Road.

Oshiyemi further assured residents that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed to manage traffic during the diversion period, ensuring minimal disruption.

This development is part of ongoing efforts by the state government to maintain the infrastructure of Lagos, particularly the busy routes leading to Victoria Island and Marina.
