Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have firmly rejected Mudashiru Obasa’s claim to the position of Speaker, reaffirming their support for the current speaker, Mojisola Meranda. This comes amid ongoing tensions within the assembly over leadership.
In a press briefing on Thursday, Steven Ogundipe, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Security, and Strategy, declared the lawmakers’ unwavering stance: “We remain committed to ensuring that Obasa’s removal stands. Whatever has to happen, the leadership should speak with us, not this charade we are seeing.”
Obasa’s attempts to reassert himself as speaker were thwarted when he, accompanied by two lawmakers and security personnel, stormed the assembly complex and entered the Speaker’s office.
This follows the withdrawal of Meranda’s security aides and ongoing discussions within the political elite.
Ogundipe also called for intervention from the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, expressing discontent with the current state of affairs: “We want to be respected and to be given our dignity. To be shown that we are elected.”
The ongoing leadership crisis has seen Obasa accused of poor leadership, abuse of office, and disregard for both his colleagues and the governor, triggering a growing call for change.
