The Lagos State Government is set to roll out 3,000 smart cameras across the state to improve road safety and streamline traffic management.

This initiative, announced by the Director of the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS), Akin-George Fashola, is part of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) aimed at bolstering traffic law enforcement.

“These cameras will monitor speed limits and act as an electronic policing tool,” Fashola explained during a radio interview. “We are focusing more on enforcing speed limits this year to reduce the high rate of accidents in Lagos.”

The smart cameras have already been installed in key locations like Alapere, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, and Allen Junction.

Fashola revealed specific speed limits for these areas: 80 km/h towards Alausa and 60 km/h towards Oworonshoki in Alapere, while Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way is set at 60 km/h due to high pedestrian activity.

At Allen Junction, the cameras will monitor red light violations and other traffic offenses.

In addition to monitoring, motorists who violate traffic laws will receive SMS notifications detailing the violation and fine.

However, drivers have the opportunity to contest fines by providing evidence, while the government will also use technology-based proof to support enforcement actions.

“This initiative is part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision for better traffic management and road safety,” Fashola concluded.
