Lagos State has taken a significant step towards improving road safety with the deployment of new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites aimed at monitoring speeding and managing traffic flow.

The initiative, launched in collaboration with Huawei Technologies, includes four new checkpoints to detect and deter overspeeding.

During a press briefing on Thursday, Lagos State’s Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasized the importance of these installations in curbing road accidents.

“The checkpoint sites are designed to detect overspeeding… One is located at Alapere, Ogudu Road, with a speed limit of 80km/h, while another is installed at Nitel, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, with a speed limit of 60km/h,” Osiyemi said.

In addition to speed monitoring, the system also includes e-police sites to catch a range of traffic violations such as running red lights and illegal U-turns.

“Enforcement will commence immediately,” Osiyemi noted, adding that fines for violations are substantial—N20,000 for red light offenses and N50,000 for speeding.

The initiative spans several critical locations across Lagos, including the Third Mainland Bridge and the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

It aims not only to penalize but also to promote safer driving habits. As Osiyemi concluded, “The goal is simple: to save lives, protect property, and create an orderly transportation environment.”

With these new installations, Lagos is hoping to reduce road accidents and enhance the safety of its streets.
