The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has revealed that the city requires approximately 15,000 public buses to adequately serve its growing population. Currently, the operational fleet stands at just over 1,000 buses.

LAMATA’s Managing Director, Abimbola Akinajo, disclosed this during a visit by the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) on Wednesday. The PCC, led by Commissioner Hafeez Odunewu, expressed concerns about the scarcity of buses and long wait times at stations.

Akinajo acknowledged the issue, stating, “We are working with the private sector to increase the number of buses on the roads. LAMATA is expecting a significant increase in the fleet with the arrival of 500 CNG buses and 50 electric vehicles by the end of the year.”

The public transport system continues to face pressure, and authorities are hopeful that these measures will alleviate the strain on commuters.
