Lagos State Government has announced an emergency vaccination exercise for students of King’s College Annexe, Victoria Island, following a recent diphtheria outbreak at the school.

The vaccination campaign, spearheaded by the Lagos State Ministry of Health, aims to curb the spread of the disease. Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry, emphasized that this action is part of the state’s efforts to protect public health.

“This proactive measure is part of the government’s urgent response to curb the spread of the disease and protect public health,” Ogunbanwo said.

The outbreak has caused concern among parents, some of whom criticized the school’s handling of the situation, citing poor sanitary conditions and inadequate communication.

“If there are no cases, why are students wearing nose masks and some even hospitalized?” questioned one anonymous parent.

In response, the state government convened a meeting with health sector stakeholders, including the WHO and the NCDC, to address the crisis. Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Health, confirmed these ongoing efforts.

The Ministry is also collaborating with the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board for the immunization drive.

Meanwhile, parents have expressed concerns over the school’s environmental conditions, urging authorities to ensure better hygiene practices.
