Lagos State is experiencing a remarkable increase in student enrolment in its public schools as more parents are opting for state-run institutions over private ones.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to education, underscoring its importance in driving the state’s 2050 economic agenda.
On Wednesday, Sanwo-Olu inaugurated the Keme Balogun Senior and Junior Colleges in Ibeshe, Ikorodu, marking the start of several new school projects across the state.
The construction and rehabilitation of schools, including Awori Junior College in Ojo, Mainland Junior Secondary School in Fadeyi, and St. Luke Junior Secondary School in Bariga, are key initiatives in this effort.
In a drive-through inspection of the new Ultra-Modern Block of Classrooms at Ajegunle Junior High School, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the transformative power of education.
“Education is the cornerstone of our THEMES+ agenda—it drives economic growth, reduces inequality, and empowers individuals to break the cycle of poverty,” he said.
The governor also highlighted the expansion of infrastructure, including the addition of an 18-classroom block, a food canteen, Intro-Tech block, and sports fields at Ajegunle.
“Investing in these schools means investing in the socio-economic development of our communities,” he stated.
Hakeem Smith, Chairman of the Special Committee on the Repair of Public Schools, explained that the deteriorating condition of some schools had prompted immediate repairs.
“The governor ordered repairs as soon as he learned about the poor state of the school. A soil test was conducted to ensure a solid foundation, and necessary reconstruction was carried out,” Smith noted.
The surge in public school enrolment is seen as a direct reflection of growing confidence in the state’s educational reforms.
Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, praised the initiative, stating, “This initiative is a testament to the administration’s commitment to student welfare, creating a conducive learning environment, and equipping students with the skills needed for success.”
