The Lagos State Government has begun evacuating floodwater from several communities on Lagos Island following recent flooding caused by ongoing drainage construction in the area.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, announced the efforts in a statement on Thursday, assuring residents that the situation will be addressed swiftly.
According to Wahab, the flood was primarily due to the ongoing construction of primary and secondary drainage systems in the area. “Pumping stations have been set up to pump out the stormwater and provide relief to residents and business owners,” Wahab said.
Communities affected by the flooding include Aroloya Street, Ojo-Giwa, Binuyo, and Oroyinyin. Wahab explained that the drainage blockage was temporary, caused by the ongoing construction of new infrastructure.
“The Lagos State government has approved a complete regeneration of Lagos Island, including the expansion of drainage systems, construction of pumping stations, and improvements to major roads,” he added.
Wahab urged residents to cooperate with contractors and follow proper waste disposal guidelines as part of the state’s effort to manage the situation. “We plead with residents to bear with the government as the construction will be completed in a very short time,” he said.
The commissioner emphasized that although some disruptions may occur, the welfare of Lagosians remains a priority for the government.
