In a sweeping crackdown on poor sanitation practices, the Lagos State Government has sealed 13 major markets for persistent violations related to illegal waste disposal.

The move is part of efforts to promote environmental cleanliness and safeguard public health in the bustling metropolis.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement on Friday via his X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that the action aligns with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.

“These enforcement actions are necessary to safeguard public health and restore order to our public spaces,” Wahab stated.

Among the affected markets are the busy Mile 12 and Ketu areas, which were shut down for “consistent violations, including the improper disposal of waste on roads, medians, and highways.”

According to Wahab, the sealed markets include:

  1. Erukan Market, Mile 12
  2. Oja Oba Market, Ketu
  3. Owoseni Tundas Market
  4. Oba Ogunjobi Market, Mile 12
  5. Shops Owners (BRT Terminal), Mile 12
  6. Mile 12 Bus Stop Shops
  7. Ketu Terminal Market (6 plazas)
  8. Ifesowapo Shop Owners Market, Mile 12
  9. Demurin St Plaza Shops, Ketu
  10. The Occupant, 6 Demurin Road, Ketu
  11. Ifelodun Market, Ketu
  12. Ibadan Unit 1 Park (between Babajide Sanwo-Olu Market and Ikosi Fruit Market)
  13. Ketu Tipper Garage

Wahab urged market stakeholders to take full responsibility for proper waste management, emphasizing that failure to do so would lead to further enforcement actions.

“The goal is a cleaner, safer, and more livable Lagos,” he added.

The state government is calling on all residents and traders to collaborate in maintaining environmental standards to prevent future disruptions.
