The Lagos State Government has pledged to enforce stronger safety measures for the transportation of hazardous materials, including gas and petroleum products, following a devastating tanker explosion on Otedola Bridge earlier this week.
The explosion, which occurred on Tuesday, caused significant damage to property and disrupted traffic, prompting an urgent response from emergency services.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, expressed the government’s regret over the incident and assured residents of enhanced safety protocols.
“The Lagos State Government deeply regrets the gas tanker explosion on Otedola Bridge, which caused widespread damage and disruption. Our thoughts are with those affected, and we commend the swift response of emergency services working tirelessly to manage the aftermath,” Osiyemi said.
He emphasized the need for stricter regulations, stating, “This incident reinforces the urgent need for stricter safety protocols for heavy-duty vehicles. The Ministry of Transportation is intensifying enforcement on the movement of hazardous materials, strengthening regulatory compliance, and implementing enhanced safety measures to prevent future occurrences.”
Osiyemi also called on transport operators to prioritize safety and cooperate with government efforts to protect lives and property.
The explosion has reignited concerns over the safety of transporting flammable materials in densely populated areas, with residents calling for long-term solutions to prevent similar incidents.
