The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has announced plans to procure compactor trucks and lease them to Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators to enhance waste management operations across the state.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, revealed this initiative, which aims to improve the efficiency of waste collection and ensure a cleaner Lagos.
“We are developing an intervention programme where we are going to bring in trucks and make them available to them on a lease basis,” said Gbadegesin.
This move comes as a response to the challenges faced by PSP operators, who are struggling due to rising diesel costs and the economic situation.
Gbadegesin emphasized that the intervention is necessary to fill the operational gaps and support the 428 PSP operators currently responsible for waste evacuation across Lagos, operating 40 routes multiple times daily.
He also urged residents to avoid indiscriminate waste disposal, stressing the importance of maintaining a sustainable environment.
“The growing population of Lagos requires more efficient and effective waste management,” Gbadegesin added, highlighting the need for continuous improvements in the city’s waste management system.
