The Oyo State Government has approved the sum of ₦690 million for the dredging of 11 flood-prone rivers across the 33 local government areas, procurement of firefighting equipment, and other key developmental projects.

This was disclosed on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, following the State Executive Council meeting.

“The government has given express approval for the commencement of the works at different locations in the state,” Oyelade stated. “This is in line with proactive measures to mitigate flooding as predicted by the Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET).”

Rivers slated for dredging are located in Iseyin, Oyo, Ibadan, Igbo Ora, and Ogbomoso among others.

The Council also approved procurement of auxiliary and special equipment for the Oyo State Fire Service Agency. This comes in the wake of several fire incidents in the state, including the recent one at Aleshinloye Market in Ibadan.

“To protect firemen from occupational hazards and improve rescue operations, fire fighting equipment will be upgraded,” Oyelade added.

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources also received approval to procure compactor trucks aimed at boosting refuse collection.

In addition, ₦224.78 million was earmarked for the installation of transformers and power backup at the Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo Monumental Park, and energy upgrades at the Ladoke Akintola Airport Road.

The Council greenlit another major project—the installation of public lighting along the Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road. The 110KM road is expected to ease traffic and boost the night-time economy.

“This project is aimed at improving socio-economic growth and investment in the state,” the Commissioner explained.

Another ₦1.99 billion was approved for the expansion and rehabilitation of key roads within Ibadan, including Bolajoko Estate, Bishop’s Court Road, and Peace Roads in Anifalaje.

In a cultural stride, the Council also approved the hosting of the World Egungun Festival later this year, with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism mandated to produce a timetable for upcoming cultural events.
