The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will suffer a major political defeat if it fields Governor Seyi Makinde as its presidential candidate in the 2027 general election.

This assertion came in response to Makinde’s appearance on a Channels Television programme, where he expressed confidence in his ability to lead Nigeria.

“I don’t have any doubt that I have the capacity to occupy the highest office in this land, and I have what it takes,” Makinde stated. However, he added a caveat, saying, “But is it what I want to do right now? Is it what Nigerians are asking for? Is it what my party will say we should do? I don’t know. We still have a long time to go.”

Reacting to the governor’s remarks, the Oyo APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olawale Shadare, dismissed the idea, describing it as disastrous for the PDP.

“We encourage him (Makinde) to go all out and secure the presidential ticket of the PDP for the next general election,” Shadare said. “It is a pity that the same PDP, which ruled our dear country for 16 years, has now become a tool of comedy in the hands of some kinds of people.”

He further warned that the party would be heading for political extinction if it allowed Makinde to fly its flag in 2027.

“We do not wish the PDP dead, but if they choose to bury the umbrella party by putting its destiny in the hands of people like Governor Seyi Makinde, good luck to them,” Shadare added.

Governor Makinde’s potential presidential bid continues to stir political debate, despite his insistence that it’s not yet a confirmed ambition.
