Mojisola Meranda has been re-elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following her resignation as Speaker earlier on Monday. Despite her short tenure as Speaker, Meranda pledged to serve the state in good faith in her new role.
“I accept the role of Deputy Speaker and pledge to serve Lagos with utmost dedication,” Meranda said after her resignation was read out at the plenary session.
Her resignation came after only a brief stint as Speaker, a position she had assumed on January 13, 2025, after the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of financial misconduct and authoritarian leadership.
Obasa, who had served as Speaker since 2015, was removed by 32 out of 40 members due to these allegations.
The Lagos House of Assembly quickly reconstituted its leadership, with Mudashiru Obasa nominated to return as Speaker. Other new appointments included David Setonji as Deputy Chief Whip and Mojeed Fatai as Chief Whip.
