The newly crowned Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has firmly stated that his ascension to the throne was a result of divine intervention, not political maneuvering.
During a thanksgiving service at the Anglican Cathedral Church, Esiele, Oyo town, on Sunday, the monarch emphasized that he had no prior relationship with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, or former Senator Monsurat Sunmonu before being selected as the 46th Alaafin.
“I never knew nor met both the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, before and during the process to the throne,” Owoade declared. “It was the will of God, and I never knew I would be the next Alaafin of Oyo.”
The new king, who was presented with the staff of office on January 13, 2025, following the passing of the late Oba Adeyemi, expressed gratitude for his position and committed to a leadership that reflects ethical standards and unity. “In unity lies strength,” he said, calling for collaboration among Oyo’s people to advance the town’s growth. “Let us remember that united we stand and divided we fall.”
During the service, Reverend Supo Ayokunle, former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), encouraged the new Alaafin to rely on divine guidance as he faces the challenges ahead.
“Be courageous, steadfast and committed,” Ayokunle advised, drawing parallels between Owoade’s rise and the biblical journey of King David.
The event was marked by the presentation of a customized Holy Bible to the Alaafin, symbolizing the sacred nature of his rule. As the monarch moves forward, he urged Oyo’s citizens, both at home and abroad, to support his reign with sincerity, love, and a shared vision for progress.
