The Delta State Government has withdrawn the disciplinary query issued to Osato Edobor, a nursing student at the School of Nursing Sciences in Agbor, following her involvement in a viral video during First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s recent visit.
In a statement released on Friday via X, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, the state’s Commissioner for Health, confirmed the withdrawal, emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding students’ rights in health-related programs and fostering a positive learning environment.
“The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, has directed the immediate withdrawal of the query issued to Nursing Student Osato Edobor by the Provost of the School of Nursing Sciences, Agbor,” the Ministry of Health stated.
Onojaeme assured the public that the government had no intention of victimizing the student and further clarified the matter in a video statement. “We don’t want to victimise any of the students,” he said.
The Commissioner also revealed that he personally contacted the affected student, who confirmed the query had been retracted. “I’ve also reached out to the student in question, and the student has confirmed to me that the letter was withdrawn late yesterday night,” Onojaeme added.
The controversy stemmed from a viral video where nursing students rejected the First Lady’s gesture of being called “our mother.” Despite the public backlash, Onojaeme reassured that the government was committed to transparency and called for the public to disregard any misinformation regarding the issue.
