The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for a thorough investigation into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over its failure to implement the recently approved N77,000 monthly allowance for corps members.
In a statement issued by NANS’ National Vice President, Inter-Campus Affairs, Felicia Akinbodunse, the student body expressed its disappointment that despite the approval by the Federal Government in July 2024, the NYSC has yet to begin disbursing the new allowance.
The Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, had previously stated that the payment delay was due to the non-release of funds.
Akinbodunse highlighted that corps members only received N33,000 as their February allowance, far below the promised N77,000, raising concerns over the NYSC’s failure to meet the February implementation deadline.
“It is unjust for corps members to still be receiving the old allowance months after the Federal Government’s approval and despite the implementation of the new minimum wage for other government employees,” she said.
NANS has demanded that the Federal Government investigate the NYSC’s failure to release the funds and ensure that corps members receive the new allowance without further delays.
The delay, Akinbodunse noted, could negatively impact the morale of corps members already struggling with the country’s economic challenges.
