The National Assembly has praised Abia State Governor Alex Otti for signing the Abia State Electricity Bill into law, establishing a regulatory body for electricity generation and distribution in the state.

The bill prioritizes renewable energy, a sector that the House of Representatives is keen to develop.

Afam Ogene, Chairman of the House Committee on Renewable Energy, commended the governor during a working visit, highlighting the bill’s strategic focus on renewable energy.

“You have gone ahead to put in place the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority, signifying that you have moved on since the National Assembly moved the issue of electricity to the concurrent list,” Ogene stated.

He invited Otti to collaborate with the National Assembly to further the country’s transition to renewable energy.

The committee has also planned a National Legislative Summit from May 5 to 7, 2025, to address the legislative gaps in the energy sector, with Ogene encouraging Otti’s participation.

Governor Otti responded positively, emphasizing the importance of power in economic development. “What you are doing is good and I support it because in the long run, renewable energy is cheaper and sustainable,” he said.

He also reassured the committee that the state is ready to boost its economy with the newly established electricity regulatory body.
