Niger State Government has officially handed over a Certificate of Occupancy to the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) for the commencement of the long-awaited Renewed Hope Housing Project. This marks a significant step in the development of 3,000 housing units on a 31-hectare land at the Three Arms Zone, Minna.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State presented the Certificate to Hon. Oyetunde Ojo, Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority, at a ceremony held in the Council Chamber of the Government House, Minna.
The state government, through the Renewed Hope Housing initiative, intends to build a diverse range of residential units: 1,000 one-bedroom flats, 1,000 two-bedroom flats, and 1,000 three-bedroom flats. Governor Bago emphasized the government’s collaboration with development partners such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), stating, “We are working closely with the UNDP and will match whatever funds they bring.”
Further details on the project include the establishment of a Sinking Fund, aimed at helping civil servants secure homes through deductions and subsidies provided by the state government. “We are ambitious to take over 100 percent of whatever the Federal Housing Authority is building,” Bago added.
The Governor also acknowledged the significant challenges faced in providing housing, especially concerning the provision of sites and services. However, he reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to overcoming these obstacles, outlining plans to provide essential infrastructure such as water, primary healthcare centers, and markets for the project’s residents.
Hon. Oyetunde Ojo highlighted the prompt commencement of the project, stating, “The housing project will kickstart immediately, and we are working in conjunction with the State Government in the building process.” He also shared that 60-70% of the contract would be awarded to local contractors, creating job opportunities for the people of Niger State. “The project will involve residents of the State in the building process so they can be held accountable and ensure the final designs meet the needs of the citizens,” he added.
During the visit, Governor Bago led the team to the Three Arms Zone, the future site of the housing project, and showcased the expansion of housing units initiated by former Governor Dr. Babangida Aliyu. Bago revealed plans to decongest the old Minna town. The team also visited the ongoing 50-housing unit project adjacent to the Lawu Estate.
