Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, despite the country’s current challenges. Speaking on his 88th birthday, Obasanjo reaffirmed his belief that Nigeria can overcome its struggles and become a nation that citizens will be proud of in his lifetime.

“I am an incurable optimist about Nigeria. Yes, the situation is bad, no doubt, but I believe that in my lifetime we will have Nigeria that we shall all be proud of,” Obasanjo said at the launch of his new books, Nigeria: Past and Future and Lest We Forget: Slavery, Slave Trade, Emancipation, and Reparation.

The event, held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, brought together notable figures, including Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, former governors, and traditional rulers.

Obasanjo, reflecting on Africa’s historical challenges, emphasized the need to free the continent from the lingering effects of colonialism and slavery.

“We have to shrug off residues of colonialism and slavery; we have to do this so as not to be re-enslaved again,” he urged.

In addition, Obasanjo rejected claims that he was older than 88, affirming his birthdate, and emphasized the importance of leadership in securing a prosperous future for Nigeria.

President Bola Tinubu also congratulated the former president, recognizing his invaluable contributions to Nigeria’s development and global influence, and wishing him continued strength and wisdom.
